Its crazy how a little change in temperature and some sunshine transitions Traverse City. It seems like everyone came out of hibernation today and dressed like it was July, window shopping downtown and walking their dogs.

The weather is warming up and things are already starting to get slushy and wet. The forecast calls for 40 degree days in Leland throughout the weekend. Beach weather! It’s a welcome break from the blustery northern Michigan winter, but I think we’re bound to see another healthy dose of snow before the leaves start to pop out of the trees.
The sunset from stony point was pretty spectacular.

It was another day in Traverse City today, but it was refreshing to talk to someone at the treasury department in Lansing that was farmiliar with Fishtown and The Cove.

For the past three years Leland has had the privilege to host the start of the Tour De Leelanau bike race. It was quite the sight to see over a hundred competitive cyclists packed up and speeding down Main street after making the turn from their starting point on North Lake Street. The Cove had the privilege to host the race’s sponsor Priority Health for lunch after the race start last year. Unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards for Priority Health to sponsor the race this year. If they choose do so in the future we’ll certain welcome them, but until then, it doesn’t mean we can’t race bikes through Leland. So how about a Tour De Leland? Of course it would be informal, BYOB (bring your own bicycle), and non-sanctioned. But I’ve got the course all mapped out. A non-standard 2.37 miles and then we can head down to the deck for a beer and relax. A couple of crossings on main street and we’re in business. Any takers?

So the groundhog says six more weeks of winter, and the farmers almanac promises an early spring, which seems to point to the northern Michigan weather being as undecided as my travel plans. Some projects brought me back up north before I even hit the state line and so today brings a farmiliar view. There’s even more ice in the harbor and the winter breakwall of ice is difficult to navigate. I think I need to invest in some spikes. With the right equipment you can stay outside for a pretty long time, which is essential for sanity this time of the year.

Thanks Mike and Kate for all your hospitality. Mike makes a real good Sunday breakfast and there’s always plenty of beer in the fridge.

Checking in from Grand Rapids….again. Steelers just won the superbowl. We caught some of the game with Matt, Cove bartender from the summer.
